Assessment of academic stress in university student

Author
Abstract
The present paper shows the results obtained after the application of an academic stress inventory, which was applied to university students. Our study´s first aim was to test the discriminant s capacity of an instrument, Academic Stress Inventory (A.S.I.; Hernández, Polo & Pozo, 1996). This instrument tries to identify, from the overall academic situations, those that are more stressfull for students and those responses that are associated to each situation. Also, it tries to find out whether all response´s components (cognitive, emotional or behavioral) behave in the same way for each situation or depends on the situation. Finally, we try to determine whether there are differences related to stressfull situations and stress responses between freshmen and third year college students. The results show that the A.S.I. allows to discriminate: the most stressfull situations (those related to work overload and lack of time to perform academic tasks, these situations are more stressfull than assesment ones —test-anxiety, lectures, ... —- ), the most outstanding response s component in most situations (the cognitive component) and between students samples. The comparative analysis among students from different grades shows that when all of them perceive the situation as stressfull, freshmen score higher in the Accademic Stress Inventory.
