Gender and previous emotion as predictors of changes in depression and anxiety in adolescence

Abstract
Several studies have renealed a remarkable increasing in anxiety and depression among adolescents. In this paper, the results of the assessment and application of a specifie program in school settings in order to prevent the increasing of such emotional variables is presented. The influence on the efficacy of the program of variables such gender and previous levels of anxiety and depression is also addressed. The sample was composed by 121 adolescents ranging from 12 to 16 years (Mean=13.2). 44 percent were males and 56 percent females. Statistical analysis revealed that females were more vulnerable in baseline period. However, gender did not influence in the efficacy of the program. Previous levels of anxiety and depression did influence on the efficacy of the program. Subjects who score higher in anxiety and depression were more benefited by the application of the program.
