Burnout and psychological symptoms: Measurement model and structural paths

Author
Abstract
The purpose of this study was to assess the measurement model of the Burnout Syndrome using the MBI (Maslach Burnout Inventory) and to estimate a structural model between burnout and psychological symptoms. A 197 secondary education teacher’s sample from twenty-four schools completed the MBI and a reduced version of the HSCL (Hopkins Symptoms CheckList). Several confirmatory factor analyses were carried out and a three-dimension oblique model showed the best adjustment for the data. A structural model was estimated, showing significant paths between emotional exhaustion and psychological symptoms of depression, somatization, anxiety, cognitive difficulties, and interpersonal sensibility.
