Conceptualization and Measurement of Emotion Regulation in Adolescents and Young Adults: Protocol for a Scoping Review

Author
Abstract
The concept of emotional regulation (ER) has become increasingly popular within empirical literature since the 1990s. However, as research interest has grown, so too has the diversity of theoretical proposals and measurement instruments. Numerous researchers have highlighted the necessity of theoretical unification and/or clarification. Therefore, the aim of this scoping review is to identify definitions, theoretical approaches, measurement instruments, and existing limitations within the field of emotional regulation in youth samples, aiming to provide greater clarity and structure to the knowledge of emotional regulation among adolescents and young adults. This review will follow the PRISMA-SCR guidelines and the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) methods for scoping reviews. The inclusion/exclusion criteria will be formulated using the PCC (People, Context, Content) framework. A comprehensive search will be conducted in three databases: PsycInfo, PubMed, and Scopus. The articles will be selected through a screening process divided into three parts: removal of duplicates, initial screening (titles and abstracts), and a second screening (full-text analysis). Data from the selected articles will be extracted based on the proposed objectives, and a table will be created highlighting key aspects previously agreed upon by researchers. Data analysis will be carried out both quantitatively and qualitatively.
