Spanish adaptation of the Athlete Burnout Questionnaire (ABQ) in a Spanish athlete sample

Author
Abstract
The Athlete Burnout Questionnaire (ABQ) is an instrument comprised of fifteen items used to assess the three burnout dimensions in the sport context. Based on a preliminary version using a sample of football players, the current paper is the final adaptation ef the questionnaire to a Spanish sample of 397 athletes (59.8% male) between 13 and 64 years. The Confirmatory Factorial Analysis showed good fit indexes and supported the three-dimensional structure (χ²/gl = 2.186; CFI = .952; NFI = .917; RMSEA = .057). The reliability of the dimensions reported coefficients between .71 and .87. Correlations with other scales confirmed the discriminant validity of the questionnaire. Taking all of the earlier data mentioned into account, the adaptation also has a suitable cross-cultural validity. Finally, standardized test scores are presented for the Spanish population based on age and kind of sport, where adults and team members display the highest levels of burnout.
