Prevalence of anxiety and stress disorders in the students of the University of La Laguna

Abstract
In this work it is presented prevalence data of anxiety andstress disorders among undergraduate students through an epidemiological one-phase design. The major assessment instrument used was the Canarian versión of The Diagnostic Interview Schedule (DIS). Subject were 636 students, representing the student population of the University of La Laguna. Results emphasize an increase level of prevalence of anxiety disorders (phobias, panic attack, generalized anxiety disorder), in the student sample in comparison with other community samples. Explanation have been made according to the stress nature of the university life conditions. The high levels of these disorders in the university population would justify the introduction of specific prevention plans and psychological assistance service.
