<title>ABSTRACT</title>This study analyzes university absenteeism as a complex phenomenon closely linked to academic emotions, stress processes, and the perceived value of educational activities. The main objective was to identify the reasons for non-attendance in a sample of 847 students from Psychology, Humanities, and Education Sciences degrees at the Autonomous University of Barcelona. The results reveal high structural absenteeism, with more than 50% of students attending less than 60% of non-mandatory theoretical sessions.
An exploratory factor analysis identified three consistent dimensions: learning-related factors, well-being, and access to information. Findings suggest that absenteeism can be interpreted as a potential emotional regulation strategy aimed at reducing academic discomfort. Teaching practices such as the literal reading of slides, unclear explanations, and unmotivating content are associated with boredom, frustration, and perceptions of wasted time, all of which increase avoidance behaviours. The well-being dimension, including physical, mental, and personal problems, further supports the interpretation of absenteeism as an emotional protection mechanism against academic distress and overload. In addition, access to slides and notes reduces the perceived added value of attending face-to-face lessons.
Overall, absenteeism is interpreted as an adaptive and functional response to environments perceived as unstimulating or emotionally costly. These findings underscore the need to transform teaching practices toward reasoning-oriented models and to strengthen institutional support in order to improve student's psychological well-being.
