Mª Peiró AB - In this paper, the Leiter and Maslach (1988) and Golembiewski, Munzenrider y Stevenson (1986) models of burnout were examined among nurses and phisicians. Work stress, job autonomy and social support were considerated as burnout antecedents. Effect of burnout is hypothesized on propensity to leave the organization. The hypothesized causal models were fitted using LISREL VIII to data obtained from 307 nurses and 209 phisicians. The goodness-of-fit of hypothesized models were not satisfactory for both samples. Nevertheless, the Leiter and Maslach (1988) model was the best fitting model. Further analyses revealed that a revised Leiter and Maslach model was more valid. The results are discussed in the context of theorical and practical implications.
