Appraisal and coping data were obtained by means of the “Inventario de Valoración y Afrontamiento”, I.V.A. (Appraisal and Coping Inventory, A.C.I.). This inventory has been designed following the Lazarus Model and assess three types of appraisal (threatening, challenge, and irrelevant) and six types of coping (cognitive and behavioral-motor directed to modify the situation, cognitive and behavioral-motor directed to reduce the emotion, passive, and avoidance). The self-report anxiety level in the situation of "to speak in public" shows high correlation with appraisal that subjects make of this situation as threatening situation; although, the correlation is null with appraisal as challenge and it is negative with appraisal of the situation as irrelevant. The appraisal of the situation "To speak in public" as threatening is closed positive related to the level of anxiety experienced in such situation, and with the avoidance coping; although it negatively correlates with the active coping skills (especially, direct toward to modify the situation). We conclude that it is necessary to assess different types of coping because not all correlate with the anxiety level in the same way. It seems to be higher for the strategies direct toward the confrontation of the situation than those direct toward to reduce emotion. And it also seems to be higher if they are cognitive type strategies than if they are action strategies (behavioral- motor). a1134-7937 a2174-0437
