The objectives were, on the one hand, to analyze the emotional perception branch scores by tasks and by age and sex, and, on the other hand, to examine the specific scores for each emotion within the different tasks by age and sex. Analyses revealed adequate internal consistency for the perception branch (α = 93) and for each task within the branch (α = 81 for Faces task and α = .90 for Pictures task). There were significant age and sex group differences, with older women scoring higher and younger men scoring lower in emotional perception. Significant differences were also found in several items from the Faces and Pictures tasks. This study provides empirical support for the internal consistency of the MSCEIT perception branch and raises theoretical implications by suggesting the existence of gender and age differences when using the MSCEIT. In addition, the emotional perception branch and its tasks show adequate reliability, which provides construct validity to Mayer and Salovey s ability model (1997). The need of extending this type of psychometric study involving the analysis of individual tasks to other branches of the MSCEIT is discussed.
